The buttspike was a simple iron cone fixed at the extreme of the lance's pole. It fulfilled three main functions: First, it helped to stick the lance or pilum into the ground, protecting the wood pole. Second, it acted as counterweight, to hold the lance from the most distant point. That's why longest lances' buttspikes were bigger (picas, sarissas) and heavier. Finally, buttspikes could act as lance tip in case they broke and only the final part remained in the hands of the soldier.
